Compare and contrast the views of Meyer and Bok on the issues of Essay

Thoroughly analyze the perspectives on Meyer and Bok on the issues of clinical expert misleading patients. State and clarify the similitudes and contrasts in their perspectives - Essay Example the divulgence of awful news to patients is a troublesome procedure; consequently, it is gainful for clinical specialists to embrace an unbiased mindset between continually coming clean and never coming clean while unveiling data to the patient. Bok be that as it may, is firm on the perspective that it is fundamental for specialists to here and there lie to the patient when certain conditions are met. He anyway doesn't concur with Meyer’s explanation that honesty is inconceivable. She sees it as inability to separate between reality from honesty. Despite the fact that she can't help contradicting this announcement, as I would see it a few similitudes with Meyer’s perspective exist. Meyer accepts that reality can't generally be unmistakably characterized subsequently; it can't generally be introduced to the patient (Meyer, n.d). For this situation Meyer gives the case of conditions that are terminal at time of divulgence, notwithstanding, may have a fix sooner rather than later. It agrees with Bok’s case of telling the patient he has in any event four months to live, rather than disclosing to him that he will pass on in four months. The way that he will live for four months is confirmed, in any case, the way that he will bite the dust isn’t. Meyer accepts that patients may request reality in the interim they don't really need reality and basically need to pick up certainty from the uplifting news. Be that as it may, Bok trusts patients need to hear reality with regards to their condition and specialists have no privilege or support to retain data on the presumption that patients really incline toward it (Bok, n.d). Bok concurs with Meyers’s see that reality may here and there hurt the patient. Meyer alludes to this as ‘therapeutic privileged’. Be that as it may, Bok accepts that this case by Meyer is overstated and profits by coming clean exist and are not given adequate consideration. Bok accepts that coming clean with the patient permits the person in question to choose what steps to take forward in their treatment procedure. She permits

Physical Objects And Sense Data Essay - 1169 Words

Continuing the Table Debate: Physical Objects and Sense Data A highly debated subject among various philosophers is the existence of physical objects; if physical objects cause and resemble a person’s sense data and if objects exist outside of what is sensed. Descartes mentions a lack of trust in human senses, and does not believe that one can know what truly exists and what does not. Later on, Russell builds upon this idea, not necessarily doubting the existence of sense data, but doubting that anything can exist with absolute certainty. Hume goes further, saying that nothing exists outside of what illusion it creates in our mind. Exploring each of these philosophers arguments, I will state each of their positions and analyze the premises that they rely on. I will then give an alternative argument that builds on each of their ideas, proving that we cannot know that there are physical objects existing that cause and resemble our sense data, although most will agree that it is likely that there are. Notably, Descartes dedicates his firs t meditation to his views on what humans can doubt. This is where he addresses his position on the senses and the physical existence of objects. He begins this with the deception of illusion: senses can deceive. Sometimes what is seen is distorted from reality. He uses the example of a stick in water looking bent, even though it is not. Consequently, he concludes from this that it would be silly for him to assume that a table or chair that heShow MoreRelatedAnalysis of Bertrand Russell ´s The Problems of Philosphy Essay1048 Words   |  5 Pages06455401 1) The philosopher Bertrand Russell in his work, â€Å"The Problems of Philosophy,† comes to some conclusions of the truth of objects in our world. Installation and Site

Installation and Site-Specific Artwork Essay Artworks are a product of the context in which they are created, formed through the skills and interpretation of the artist. The events and issues of the time and place which the artist experiences determines their ideologies and inspiration. Brazilian artist Henrique Oliveira’s utilises discarded pieces of wood from his home country in order to create his gargantuan installations. From Sao Paulo, the 40 year old artist showcases issues in regards to urban degeneration to promote thought and increase audience awareness. Mark Jenkins is an American installation artist living in Washington DC, who works with interactive sculptures using plastic tape casts. Born in 1970, he insists the art of his creations is in how the sculpture affects the area and audience around it. Jenkins uses his installations to shock and raise social consciousness around the issue of suicide. Henrique Oliveira’s work Baitagogo is an installation artwork which interacts directly with its surroundings in Palais de Tokyo museum in Paris. The 22,000 ft. tructure encapsulates a tumour-like growth emerging from the buildings beams, writhing around itself in a knotted, tree-like form. The outer bark of the structure is comprised of wood fencing from construction sites in Brazil. This peculiar source of his materials is almost cheeky in the way that he’s taking from the rich to support his artwork, in which he is supporting the poor. By taking this material he is also quite literally breaking down barriers between the rich and poor, as the wooden beams are in place to restrict general access to the construction site. He also makes use of native wood from around his home, interweaving his Brazilian heritage into the components. The artwork is a response to the increasing amount of ‘favelas’ or slums emerging in his hometown, Sao Paulo, in a similar tumour-like fashion. Taking inspiration from medical and biological textbooks, the tumorous Gordian knot of the structure conveys the chaos and violent disarray of slum cities. Oliveira takes inspiration from many aspects of his life; â€Å"I believe that all everything that we make is the result of our life experience, our culture, our language and the exchanges we have made with other people during our lives,† The installation represents a reverse in urbanisation, in the way that the wooden structure of the building is returning to its former self, but in a negative light. As poverty in Brazil increases so does this parasite infect the structure of the building. The growth seems to burst forth from the beams, indicating the overwhelming surge of sickness it represents. The irony of this message is that the artwork appears to be harmless and graceful, a natural commodity, though what It represents is so toxic. The artwork, though it appears graceful, is a weed, set to strangle the building, frozen in time and space for us to consider. The stark white flawlessness of the gallery contrasts with the rough, organic, textured appearance of the structure, highlighting the vast societal gap between the rich and the poor in Sao Paulo while the overwhelming size of the artwork identifies the magnitude of the economic and cultural crisis. The artwork delivers a strong message to the audience in regards to our own self destruction. It comes as a warning of the escalation of this parasite, this poverty. The installation resembles a tree, but it was created by man, this identifies man as the creator of this problem, and the potential for the creator to become the disarmer. Just as the artist created this work, so can he take it down. Economic equality is the issue Oliveira is presenting, and awareness of this issue can help to prevent an intensification of this problem. .u8f9fe63d53498977ea502ce2effd828e , .u8f9fe63d53498977ea502ce2effd828e .postImageUrl , .u8f9fe63d53498977ea502ce2effd828e .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u8f9fe63d53498977ea502ce2effd828e , .u8f9fe63d53498977ea502ce2effd828e:hover , .u8f9fe63d53498977ea502ce2effd828e:visited , .u8f9fe63d53498977ea502ce2effd828e:active { border:0!important; } .u8f9fe63d53498977ea502ce2effd828e .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u8f9fe63d53498977ea502ce2effd828e { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u8f9fe63d53498977ea502ce2effd828e:active , .u8f9fe63d53498977ea502ce2effd828e:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u8f9fe63d53498977ea502ce2effd828e .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u8f9fe63d53498977ea502ce2effd828e .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u8f9fe63d53498977ea502ce2effd828e .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u8f9fe63d53498977ea502ce2effd828e .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u8f9fe63d53498977ea502ce2effd828e:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u8f9fe63d53498977ea502ce2effd828e .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u8f9fe63d53498977ea502ce2effd828e .u8f9fe63d53498977ea502ce2effd828e-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u8f9fe63d53498977ea502ce2effd828e:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Age Of Romanticism EssayMark Jenkins’ Dublin from his outside series depicts what is first interpreted as a woman stepping off the edge of a building. The artwork was situated in Dublin, Ireland, during September 2011’s suicide awareness week, on an ordinary street, pedestrians unrestricted and unaware of the artwork prior to its installation. With a much closer inspection of the artwork, the figure is revealed to be made out of a plastic tape cast, wearing a wig and plain clothing as a disguise. Jenkins describes his art making process, â€Å"First I was only installing clear tape figures made from casts of myself but later I began dressing them with my own clothes with the idea to camouflage the art as reality. † This gives the artwork an initial authenticity and shock factor. The blonde hair of the figure hides any expression from view, giving a mysterious anonymity to the artwork. Her facelessness allows the audience to substitute their own imagination into the identity of the figure. The figure is shown with her hands in her pockets, a casual gesture which is juxtaposed to emphasise the dangerous circumstances she is in. The figure is exposed to the elements, the wind being able to flutter in the wind contrasts with its stillness, the only indication we have that it is not alive. The positioning of the figure is one which would not be sustainable as a human, the rigidity of the cast allows it to balance precariously on the edge of a building where a real person would most likely fall and die. This captures a moment between life and death which would not usually be able to be studied. The artwork forces the audience – which is anyone who passes the installation – to consider the issue of suicide, and what their response would be in a situation when the figure was a real person. It brings the idea to the mind of anyone passing by, regardless of if they wanted to or not. In this case, the audience were not necessarily art enthusiasts or gallery-goers, any member of the public could have been subjected to it. In this way, the installation is brutal in its message, however effective. It also instils a sense of relief within the audience upon the realisation that the subject isn’t alive, and is suspended in space rather than falling to its death. The controversial artwork was placed atop a building where it was not particularly authorised, and as a result of many alarmed phone calls, was taken down soon after its installation. Despite the brevity of the artworks exposure, it stirred much interest in the general public, with people stopping to pause and ponder its meaning. The attention given to the artwork, Mark Jenkins believes is a fundamental part of its significance; â€Å"The more people that stop to look at it, take pictures of it, it kind of grows the piece. † The artwork used the idea of an urban theatre – using the street as a stage and catching the audience unawares for maximum coverage and impact. Scandalously, this artwork is one of the more tame artworks of his collection in regards to suicide, as the figure is identifiable as being inanimate, unlike some of his other controversial works, which have had ambulances and police called to the scene of what appears to be a life or death situation. Henrique Oliveira and Mark Jenkins are artists of vastly different cultures and environments. They are both affected by significant issues in desperate need of society’s attention. Despite the vast difference between the issues upon which they focus, both demonstrate through their art making practice and the ideologies they display, that artworks are a product of the context in which they are created. This is not art, static in a frame upon a wall, this is life. .udbf9117bb18de11d32bb7c4667b3b8c6 , .udbf9117bb18de11d32bb7c4667b3b8c6 .postImageUrl , .udbf9117bb18de11d32bb7c4667b3b8c6 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .udbf9117bb18de11d32bb7c4667b3b8c6 , .udbf9117bb18de11d32bb7c4667b3b8c6:hover , .udbf9117bb18de11d32bb7c4667b3b8c6:visited , .udbf9117bb18de11d32bb7c4667b3b8c6:active { border:0!important; } .udbf9117bb18de11d32bb7c4667b3b8c6 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .udbf9117bb18de11d32bb7c4667b3b8c6 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .udbf9117bb18de11d32bb7c4667b3b8c6:active , .udbf9117bb18de11d32bb7c4667b3b8c6:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .udbf9117bb18de11d32bb7c4667b3b8c6 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .udbf9117bb18de11d32bb7c4667b3b8c6 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .udbf9117bb18de11d32bb7c4667b3b8c6 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .udbf9117bb18de11d32bb7c4667b3b8c6 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .udbf9117bb18de11d32bb7c4667b3b8c6:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .udbf9117bb18de11d32bb7c4667b3b8c6 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .udbf9117bb18de11d32bb7c4667b3b8c6 .udbf9117bb18de11d32bb7c4667b3b8c6-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .udbf9117bb18de11d32bb7c4667b3b8c6:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Venus de Milo EssayBibliography: http://blog.gessato.com/2012/09/17/architectural-anthropomorphism-by-henrique-oliveira/#ixzz2vQZQU7Ds Architectural Anthropomorphism (8/3/14) http://inhabitat.com/Henrique-oliveiras-organic-scupltures-made-from-reclaimed-wood-symbolize-sao-paulos-favelas/ Henrique Oliveira (8/3/14) http://yatzer.com/Henrique-Oliveura-yatzer Henrique Oliveira talks to Yatzer (8/3/14) http://itsnicethat.com/articles/henrique-oliveira-baitagogo It’s Nice That: Art (8/3/14) http://journalnow.com/relishnow/article_f48dbcd9-d2d3-59fe-941d-eb69bd126ca1.html Testing the Limits (10/3/14) http://medialectic.wordpress.com/2012/03/21/mark-jenkins/ Mark Jenkins (10/3/14) http://washingtoncitypaper.com/articles/8186/using-his-indoor-voice Using His Indoor Voice (10/3/14)

Regulatory framework in Australia for Tata There are regulatory frameworks that affect the multinational company in Australia, these are well understood by the company and it seems that those standards and foreign policies must be examined while Foreign Investment Regulation has a particular overview that it offers to the companies that are operating in Australia. The regulatory framework that matters for the other company to operate in Australia is the FDI that states the investment which is actually undertaken by the Australian government from an enterprise which is operating in Australia. There is about an equity of 10 percent of share that is merely taken as a recognized threshold by the foreign investment and these are merely classified as portfolio investment (Truman, 2008). For Australian process of FDI screening, 15 percent threshold is important that is a critical investment for Australias economic development. According to McKinsey and Company (2016) foreign direct investment has a vital role in the regulatory framework for economic development of Australia. The history is examined that domestic investment has exceeded when compared to the domestic saving. The foreign capital inflows has enlarged and are essential for the new capital formation that would help to increase the productivity and even per capita income of the country. The emerging market has been growing with the reflected importance and the performance as compared to other economies, so there are regulations and rules when a multinational company operates in Australia. Tata with its market share has some regulatory frameworks that are considered with the peak match for FDI (Larum, 2011). There are some trends that are considered for the development of the company and these are classified with an increase in the competition and this may be an advantage for the global FDI inflows. As per Monti (2010) Tata company has faced some difficulties to operate in the market and have a competitive advantage that can be undergone with the foreign collaborations and an international logistic supply chain. There were joint ventures by other company to operate in the international market with an international business that engages some laws and practices as per the professional programmes paper that assisted the standards and emphasize in the applications and proceses for the case laws in business operation. These issues were already examined as the regulatory framework has a wide area where FDI and FTP policy are broader aspects that are considered in the company. these have been discussed by viewing the international trade bodies that are likely examined by WTO and are mainly discussed in detail with these practices and procedures (Golub, 2003). Therefore, Tata has even faced some regulatory framework that affects the operations of the multinational company. Treaties conventions and agreements that impact an MNC TATA has a huge significance in its home county but in Australia, due to the trade policies, the company has to face several issues related to trade and international policies. Also is has to be noted that the car manufacturing companies in Australia are in numerous quantities. That is, there is a huge competition for car companies in Australia which makes it difficult for TATA to sustain in the Australian market. The Australian market has a good number of domestic as well international companies. The Japan, china, Europe, America based companies have a good market share in the Australian market. It is thus very important and hard for the company to maintain its significant market share (Taylor et al, 2012). Also the Australian government has some strict policies regarding the environmental and sustainability aspects. Thus the company had to take care of the environmental issues and follows the policies regarding the environmental conditions. If Tata wants to globalize in various countries, the company needs to follow the policies of that country strictly. The company has followed the small scale vehicles and commercial vehicles and has left itself open for the emerging industries. Also the rise in the prices in the global economy is a huge concern for the company (Todaro Smith, 2011). The cost of steel and aluminum are getting high due to which the company faces a lot of issues on the production department. In Australia, there no more steel and aluminum companies which can supply these raw materials to the company in cheap and affordable prices. Due to the company has to get the raw materials and the steel imported from various other countries where the steel is available in affordable prices (Anca, 2010). The company has several issues regarding transportation and logistics and the supply of the raw materials. The company imports numerous raw materials for the manufacturing of products. The shipping and logistics charges are quite high. Due to the increase in the prices of petrol and diesel the globalization has effected in a greater extend as the logistics have been increasing their charges and the companiea have to face the growth this rise in the fuel prices. This makes the companies bear hig fuel prices and high logistics along with the raised raw materials which affects the company at a greater extend (Kekeocha, 2011). Also the deisng of TATA motors are based on the Italiand and Indian countries which are generally not much used in the Australian market. The company has to hire the professional designers to design exclusive cars and vehicles as per the needs of the Australian citizens. The company has adopted a structure of analyzing the demographics and behavior of the customers in different countries. Thus the company identifies and identifyies the needs and requirements of the Australian customers and the design the productrs as per the needs. The separate department has to be allocated to the company for designing products for Australia. TATA has several divisions in Australia and has a proven significance of over 30 years in this country. Due to the liberal and strong trade relations of Australia and India, the company does not face issues in trading and exporting the materials (Anca, 2010). The company has several departments like the TATA communications, TATA steel, TATA motors etc which has been developed in Australia and has occupied quite a significant share in the market (Andrea, 2011). The trade relations between both these countries have developed due to the emergence of many companies of India that established in Australia and vice versa. There are some free trade agreements which are obeyed by the other countries needing to do business in the Australian market. Thus there are no legal issues which hinder the trade relations with the Australian industries. Tata is also a huge provider of IT services in the Australian markets and the Australian market is quite high inters of IT services. Thus the services of TATA in the Australian market are quite demanding and successful (Anca, 2010). The company has emerged its IT sector in New Zealand an Australia by considering the growth and development of the IT sector in the Australian market. Due to the rise of small and multinational companies in Australia, TATA has identified the need of IT services in Australia and has developed a huge platform over there which provides IT services to numerous companies (Moore David, 2009). There is a huge completion in the Australian market and the greatest benefit for TATA is the competitive advantage achieved from other companies. Due to the competitiveness among companies, each and every concerned body is benefited. The companies constantly try to develop strategies which are not developed by other companies and try to pvoide the customers with the desired products. Due to this, the company as well the customers both is benefited. The company competes with itself and develops while emerging with new and unique products. Also the country gets benefited due to the employment the compa ny brings to the country (Anca, 2010). Conclusion Recommendations Multinational companies that are operated in Australia have a challenge and a risk that need to be faced to operate while describing the regulatory framework and the the affects of the operations that are globally considered. Tata as a multinational company has wide operations all over the world with around more than 100 countries. Since globalization has felt the need to operate in other countries, it is necessary to know the regulatory frameworks for different countries at the time of operation. The FDI and the domestic market operations were considered at the time of economic development. There are some treaties that impact to the development of the multinational company for the products and services that are operated in Australia. It mainly impacts negative when the treaties and agreements are considered to hinder in the success of the multinational company. John F. Kennedys Legacy in Education and the Space Race

John F. Kennedy's Legacy in Education and the Space Race While the last photographs of John F. Kennedy preserve him eternally in Americas collective memory  as 46 years old,  he would have been 100 years old on May 29, 2017. Education was one of the signature issues of President Kennedy, and there are a number of legislative efforts and messages to Congress that he initiated to improve education in several areas: graduation rates, science, and teacher training. On Raising High School Graduation Rates   In a  Special Message to the Congress on Education,  delivered  on  February 6, 1962, Kennedy laid out his argument that  education in this country is the right- the necessity- and the responsibility- of all.   In this message, he noted the high number of high school dropouts: Too many- an estimated one million a year- leave school before completing high school- the bare minimum for a fair start in modern-day life. Kennedy referenced the  high percentage of dropouts in 1960, two years earlier. A data study  prepared by the  Institute of Educational Studies (IES) at the  National Center for Educational Statistics, showed the high school dropout rate in 1960 was at a high 27.2%. In his message, Kennedy also spoke about the 40% of students at that time who had started but never completed their college education.   His message to Congress also laid out a plan for increasing the number of classrooms as well as increased training for teachers in their content areas.  Kennedys  message to promote education had a powerful effect. By 1967, four years after his assassination, the total number of high school dropouts was reduced by 10% to 17%. The dropout rate has been falling incrementally ever since. As of 2014, only 6.5% of students drop out of high school. This is an increase of 25% in graduation rates from when Kennedy first promoted this cause. On Teacher Training and Education In his Special Message to the Congress on Education (1962), Kennedy also outlined his plans to improve teacher training by collaborating with the  National Science Foundation and the Office of Education.   In this  message, he proposed a system where, Many elementary and secondary school teachers would profit from a full year of full-time study in their subject-matter fields, and he advocated that these opportunities be created. Initiatives like teacher training were part of Kennedys New Frontier  programs. Under the policies of the New Frontier, legislation was passed to expand scholarships and student loans with  increases in funds for libraries and school lunches. There were also funds directed to teach the deaf, children with disabilities, and children who were gifted. In addition, literacy training was authorized under Manpower Development and Training Act (1962) as well as an allocation of Presidental funds to stop dropouts and the  Vocational Education Act (1963). Kennedy saw education as critical to maintaining the economic  strength of the nation.  According to Ted Sorenson,  Kennedys speechwriter, no other domestic issue occupied Kennedy as much as education. Sorenson quotes Kennedy as saying: Our progress as a nation can be no swifter than our progress in education. The human mind is our fundamental resource. On Science  and Space Exploration The successful launch of  Sputnik 1,  the first artificial Earth satellite, by  the Soviet space program  on October 4, 1957, alarmed American scientists and politicians alike. President  Dwight Eisenhower appointed the first presidential science adviser, and a Science Advisory Committee asked part-time scientists to serve as advisers for their initial steps. On April 12, 1961, only four short months into Kennedys presidency, the Soviets had another stunning  success. Their Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin completed a successful mission to and from space. Despite the fact that the United States space program was still in its infancy, Kennedy responded to the Soviets with his own challenge, known as the moon shot, in which Americans would be the first to land on the moon.   In a speech  on  May 25, 1961, before a joint session of Congress, Kennedy proposed  space exploration to put astronauts on the moon, as well as other projects including nuclear rockets and weather satellites. He was quoted as saying: But we do not intend to stay behind, and in this decade, we shall make up and move ahead. Again, at  Rice University on September 12, 1962, Kennedy  proclaimed that America would have a  goal to land a man on the moon and bring him back by the end of the decade, a goal that would be directed to educational institutions: The growth of our science and education will be enriched by new knowledge of our universe and environment, by new techniques of learning and mapping and observation, by new tools and computers for industry, medicine, the home as well as the school. As the American  space program known as Gemini was pulling ahead of the Soviets, Kennedy gave one of his last speeches on October 22, 1963,  before the National Academy of Sciences, which was celebrating its 100th anniversary. He expressed his overall support for the  space program and emphasized the overall importance of science to the country: â€Å" The question in all our minds today is how science can best continue its service to the Nation, to the people, to the world, in the years to come†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Six years later, on July 20, 1969,  Kennedys efforts came to fruition  when Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong took a giant step for mankind and stepped onto the Moons surface.

Refugees Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Refugees - Essay Example by reporting on the High Level Dialogue on International Migration and Development’s 2013 meeting, which was hosted by the Permanent Observer Mission to the Holy See to the UN to discuss response to the refugee crisis (cmsny.org, 2013). In discussing the refugee crisis, the article highlights the countries that have had to deal with the refugee crisis, as well as the main challenges they face in hosting refugees. According to the writer, other countries should be doing more to assist in the refugee crisis by giving more aid and assistance to the host countries and partnering with them for long-term solutions. This is important to ensure that the situation is not made worse by inability of host countries to admit refugees. The article’s main argument holds that the slow response by the international community, aside from Syria’s neighbors, will worsen the already critical refugee situation. The refugee crisis has resulted in over one million children living in refugee camps and camps for the internally displaced, which has placed them in danger of exploitation through trafficking, early marriage, and child labor (cmsny.org, 2013). In addition, the crisis has also affected fellow refugees from Palestine, Iraq, Sudan, Afghanistan, and Somalia, who have had to flee most parts of the country. This mass exodus of humans from Syria to neighboring countries has burdened host countries with extra budgetary expenses, which will only worsen as the war drags on. Any more significant numbers of refugees will place huge economic and social burdens on the host countries (cmsny.org, 2013), which may turn refugees to maintain their own countries’ socio-economic wellbeing. In making this argument, the writer makes the assumption that there will be no cessation of hostilities and that the refugee crisis will only get worse as more of Syria becomes a war zone. In my opinion, it is important that other countries become in the mitigation of the Syrian refugee crisis. This is

Wikipedia Reflection Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Wikipedia Reflection - Research Paper Example However, my articles were not edited by my peers in class and those who did edit it were not from my class, while these edits were only minor in nature. Moreover, my attempts to offer Wikilove were not reciprocated after I chose a random person who edited the article but there was no reciprocation. Overall, my experience with Wikipedia was great, exciting, and interesting; although I came to the conclusion I may not do this again due to my lack of experience and the fact that it was too time-consuming. However, if I find something interesting with a poorly-done page or without a page, I may decide to do it again. My first experience after joining Wikipedia was that I was exposed to the rules and guidelines on the site, as well as its nature as a group effort. This experience supported Kraut et al (2011) claim that people are more willing to make contributions on online groups if they like the group. Indeed, although I enjoyed writing the article and posting it, I do not expect that I will do so again because I failed to increase the value of the outcomes for the group members, which reduced their willingness to take part in the group setting. I attempted to increase the commitment of my fellow classmates to my Wikipedia page by attempting to make my page interesting to increase their chances of liking the article. In addition, there was an attempt on my part to create a bond with some of those visiting the page by rewarding them. I tried to follow the rules and guidelines of Wikipedia as much as possible, such as those on naming articles and maintenance of articles (Ayers et al, 2012). I als o realized that editing Wikipedia has become more difficult over time compared to the first time I tried it. Kraut et al (2011) make a design claim that people are more likely and willing to make contributions in a group setting if others in the group are also contributing. On posting my article, I realized that the group consisting of my classmates was

Choosing a Secondary Storage Essay Example for Free

Choosing a Secondary Storage Essay Introduction Nowadays, data is the lifeblood for today’s digital organization. The integrity, availability and the protection of the date are vital to a business productivity and successfulness, therefore storage solutions are still the priority in IT budgets. GJ Consultation Sdn Bhd currently is facing a storage problem. Their storage system performance’s bottlenecks having a serious impact on their business productivity. The sluggish primary storage performance and maintenance issue were slowing down the company’s response to customer request which affecting the overall business productivity. Besides, their backup solution was becoming difficult to effectively protect date within ever shrinking back up window. Thus GJ Consultation Sdn Bhd now needed to search for a secondary storage which can solve all the problems. They require a storage that can optimize storage response time, ensure disaster recovery, implement a highly solution and the most important is to ensure a better access to customer date and protect more than 100TB of data without adding heavy cost and complex management. The era of data and information clearly shows that there is a rising demand for more storage. There are a numbers of options available in the market. The most prevalent would be direct-attached storage (DAS), network-attached storage (NAS) and storage area network (SAN). There is no one is the best for everyone. It is important to focus on the specific needs and the business goals of the organization. Therefore, there are several factors to consider which include capacity, performance, reliability, data protection and budget concerns. We will look into that in more detail later. Many people will argue that SAN are more powerful that NAS, but for GJ Consultation Sdn Bhd, I suggest that the Network Attached Storage (NAS) would be the most suitable storage solution to solve their storage problems. The factors that affecting of choose a secondary storage will be discussed in the next section. NAS is a data storage systems with a specialized hardware and software attached to a network. NAS products is an information data storage server, they have converged to serve all in one servers for date based applications. A NAS is to provide storage and access to data. Picture 1.1 show the Network-attached storage. 2.0 Factors affecting of choosing a secondary storage A storage solution can be defined as a hardware whose main function is to store and sharing data or information. There are many types of storage with many different functions. The storage for business usually is in the form of servers. To choose a right storage for your business, there are several factors that need to be considering when choosing storage which include reliability, capacity and scalability, the budget concern. Capacity The first factor that need to taken into consideration when choosing storage is the capacity of the storage. It is very important that we should very clear that what is the size and scope of the data that you want to store and what capacity is needed to store it? The firm should choose the storage which suitable for the organization or business purpose and functions. The firm should also consider the types of data to store and the frequency of access the data when choosing a storage. NAS systems can provide many terabytes of storage in high density. GJ Consultation Sdn Bhd is a consulting firm which provides services in finance and business strategy to leading law firms and government agencies. They have a lot of date that need to store and share with customer which some of it might sensitive. Therefore it is suggested that they should choose a file-level storage. A NAS device is a single storage unit best suited for file-level storage connected directly to network. NAS often configures especially for file- sharing. Performance Speed Different storage will have different return rate of speeds for data. If the date store is monthly use, means that you no need the fastest storage; if the date store will be use very frequently, is better to choose the fast performance storage. Knowing this can help you save in cost. A business normally will look for a better file access speed. GJ Consultation might need a fast performance storage since they are providing consultant services to customers which the date stored might be use frequently and need to response to customers very quickly. Transfer speed over the network is the primary indicator of a NAS because it uses file-level protocol when uploading or downloading large files. NAS can provide performance benefits. For example, NAS can take over the work of serving the email data, freeing resources on the email server for email-specific processes. Scalability Scalability is important in terms of both computing power and storage capacity. The performance and capacity should scale independently of one another. Scalability is important because the ability of the storage would need to be expanded in future in order to cope with increased use. NAS is a suitable storage which suggested for GJ Consultation Sdn Bhd because it is easy to set up and easy to use, even a non IT based staff can manage the NAS. Reliability Reliability of storage also is one of the factors which is very important and need to be concerned. Reliability is important because the loss of data and downtime can lead to loss in revenue and threaten the survival of the business. In today’s world, most of the people demand a highly reliability, shared storage device that is accessible to multiple network devices. NAS is the newer version of storage after DAS (data-attached storage), it use of highest-performing drives with premium components that been qualified to extreme premium environment. NAS is suitable for GJ Consultation Sdn Bhd since it produce the most reliable and highest-performance data storage solution. NAS is same reliable with normal server. From the storage functional system, concepts are equally. They both can act as server. Even lower end NAS systems have the high reliability features such as RAID and hot swappable drives and components. Cost or budget concern Usually is the main concern of an organization to purchase a certain products or services. Cost in here not only means the equipment cost, but management and maintenance cost as well. Management and maintenance cost at here meaning that the cost to maintain the storage, the cost to hire the IT consultant to give training on the ways to use the storage and so on. GJ Consultation Sdn Bhd is having a storage problem and they want to buy a suitable storage which can help them solve the problem they are facing currently without adding heavy cost for their business. Here, it is suggested to the firm that network-attached storage (NAS) would be a suitable storage solution which is less expensive if compare to others. The management and maintenance cost is lower also because NAS is easy to set up and easy to use. Security The firms have a lot of date and some of the data might be sensitive which relate to legal need to be store and share between customers, thus data protection can be one of the factors that need to be taking into consideration also. NAS provides data protection benefits in data protection plan and provide redundant storage for sensitive data. Every NAS appliance includes user security to allow or restrict file access based on username and passwords. Management Management here means the administrator who in charge of the storage solution. He need to be aware of the challenges that might be arise for the solution and consider what are the monitoring tools are available to monitor performance and warn for the possible failures. The storage should not be too complex to manage in order to save the cost of management and maintenance. 3.0 Advantages of seeking a higher performing storage A secondary storage device for computers are not only for storing back up files, they also allow computers users to expand their ability to transfer a large amounts of data from one computer to another. For GJ Consultation Sdn Bhd, as I mention earlier, the suggested storage that most suitable if the Network Attached Storage (NAS). There are several advantages of seeking a higher performing storage which suggested here. Mass Storage The capacity of the secondary storage is very high that allow us to store a large amount of data. We can store the data into the secondary storage in the form of gigabyte and terabytes. In that case, we can back up the all data easily and need not worry for losing data. Usually an organization will have plenty of data that need to be stored to support the business operations. For this, the primary storage would not be able to do it. NAS provide an efficient of sharing a large individual files among individual users. NAS can store and manage the data up to terabytes level. Besides, NAS allowed us to add more storage without shutting down the network. Reliability Security It is considered safe that storing data into the secondary storage. The data can be store in the secondary storage which is the NAS in permanent form. Therefore the firm no needs to worry of loss of data or lack of data even after many years later. NAS provide data protection benefits so that it is safe to store the sensitive data. This is one of the advantages by choosing NAS because GJ Consultation Sdn Bhd is handle highly sensitive data. The data stored on live database server will be stored to NAS in the same time so that the data will exist even if the database server faced physical failure. Performance The computer could have a better performance with adding a secondary storage. This can help users to increase the speed of storing data, access data or transferring data which indirectly increase the productivity of the firm. With a secondary storage, the computer of the organization can fully operate effectively. Performance of serving files can be increase by a NAS because NAS included file-system storage. NAS is a system used for storing files in a central location, accessible through a network, so that other computer systems can store and retrieve the data files. Comfort The date store in the secondary storage can be accessed easily and immediately. The data can share with others such as customers very easily and convenient. This can increase the productivity of the organization and contribute to gain profit for the organization. NAS is a server which has the dual function of application serving and files sharing and provides a lot of flexibility in data access by virtue of being independently. The utility rate of NAS is high because the storage is shared across multiple servers. Multiple NAS systems or devices can be manage by a central and then it can conserving the time and resources, Economic The cost of a secondary storage is cheaper than adding the memory of the computer. For GJ Consultation Sdn Bhd, NAS is suggested to them as their secondary storage rather than a SAN. SAN requires the purchase of a Fibre Channel which is very expensive; NAS requires a standard Ethernet NIC which is much cheaper. This indirectly reduces the cost for storage devices. Furthermore, SAN is very hard to understand, it will cause the management and the maintenance cost increase; however NAS is easy to understand and easy to maintain, indirectly reduces the cost of management and maintenance for the firm. NAS is a simple and cost-effective way to achieve fast data access for multiple clients at the file level. 4.0 Disadvantages of seeking a higher performing storage There is nothing perfect in this world; there is no any storage which is the best. A secondary storage has several advantages and of course has several of disadvantages. Over Whelmed NAS can be used by many computers on a network. When everyone is trying to access the device at the same time, it might lead to overwhelmed. This could happen because of the limitation of network bandwidth, and the processing power within the device. When there is a large amount of users simultaneously access data, it will create the bottlenecks on the local area network and server. Besides, NAS device could become a single point of failure. To solve this issue, those important files across multiple units should be distribute, schedule and run regular remote backup routines. Financial Budget concern Getting a higher performance of storage, in other words that is one of the expenses cost for the Organization. No matter how valuable is the storage, it still will affect the financial budgeting for the organization for short term. The organization needs to allocate fund for the storage equipment cost, and also for the maintenance and management cost of the storage. This is just a very short term disadvantages because advantages of the secondary storage will contributes profits to the organization and then can cover the cost of getting the storage. Time consuming The staffs of the organization might need times to understand and make use of the secondary storage. The administrator would first study and understand in detail for the storage then he might need to give training to the staffs in order for them to know how to operate and maximize the usage of the storage. This is important because if the secondary storage not fully utilize by the organization would be wastage for the organization. However this might take some times to completely educate everyone in the organization to fully utilize the storage and it is hard to ensure whether the storage has been fully utilized. There will be a wastage and loss of money for the organization if the users of the organization not able to use the storage. That is no point of spending an amount of money for the organization to buying a powerful product but no one can fully utilize it. Backup challenge We can back up the data by NAS but because NAS is file-level storage, which means transferring data and storing data is by file-level. If users have millions of small files, it could be a problem to back up the data because NAS will store the data by file name. NAS cannot do image-level backup and cannot serve raw device. Besides, NAS is difficult to backup the data to tape. Large block of data A NAS is not able to move a large block of data which is important for bandwidth-intensive applications such as imaging, database or transaction processing. NAS does not offer fast data transfer while reducing input/output latency or server workloads. NAS also not provide high volume transaction processing especially the companies that conduct business on the web. Same with the backup issues, if the user has millions of small file that want to store or share to another, NAS is not an option to do that. The only way to solve this without adding budget to seeking for the other storage is adding the capacity of the NAS, since the scalability of NAS is high but of course it has its limit. 5.0 Conclusion Digital assets will only continue to growth rapidly in the future. It is important to choose the right storage and to implement technologies that based on the industry standard which can minimize the interoperability concerns and provides long term investment protection for the organization.
